Diploma in Sport (Development) (SRS50506)

The SRS50506 Diploma of Sport (Development) is a nationally accredited qualification, and is suitable for people working in the sports industry as Sports Development Officers, Sports Administrators, Indigenous Sports Development Officers, Level 2 Coaches seeking formal sports qualifications.

This qualification is designed to reflect the role of team leaders and supervisors in the industry sector.

The Diploma of Sport (Development) could lead to career opportunities in the sporting area such as a Sport Development officer who promotes sports and skills development, and oversees the participation of young people in sport at the local/regional level, Talent Development manager, Competition manager, or Program developer.

This qualification is part of the National Training Package and is recognised throughout Australia.

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to successfully coach and officiate in a wide range of sports, as well enter into an administrative role directly related to the sport and recreation industry. You will learn to facilitate the development of competing athletes to improve performance for themselves and/or that of a team. You will also learn to coach children and people with special needs. You will learn skills in sports science, sport psychology, nutrition, and planning and conducting training programs.

This qualification facilitates the development of the following knowledge and skills at the national level:

  • Observing athletes performances to determine the level of instruction required;
  • Teaching techniques for athletes to acquire additional skills or improve existing skills;
  • Supervising practical sessions;
  • Planning, conducting, evaluating, and modifying individualized long term, high performance training
  • programs;
  • Implementing sports first aid procedures and applying sports first aid;
  • Supervising the physical development of athletes;
  • Aiding in the psychological preparation of athletes for training and competition;
  • Applying the principles of eating for peak performance;
  • Organizing and liaising with sports science support staff;
  • Planning and directing game strategy, sometimes in consultation with club officials;
  • Analyzing the progress of games or competitions and giving signals/instructions to athletes;
  • Carrying out after competition analysis and evaluation of strategy and performance;
  • Recruiting players and other support staff;
  • Supervising sporting events;
  • Controlling the entry and participation of competitors in sporting events;
  • Determining violations of rules and regulations and determining penalties for those breaches;
  • Deciding on results and , recording and announcing of results;
  • Evaluating, analyzing and modifying the conduct and outcomes of officiating to improve performance;
  • Manage conflict related to officiating;
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating a fitness and recovery program for officials, which incorporates eating for peak performance;
  • Being involved in the administration of competitions and athletes;
  • Undertaking related administrative tasks such as booking venues, organizing tours, budgeting and arranging entry into competition; and
  • Being responsible for equipment required for competition

Enrolled students will complete all 9 mandatory Core units, 16 Stream Units from the functional area of development, and 9 elective units as chosen from any competency within the Training Package.

Certificate IV in Sport (Development) is a pre-requisite for this qualification, but can be embedded into the Diploma of Sport SRS50506 to allow students to complete the Diploma course.

Those learners/coaches wishing to undertake this qualification should be established coaches and/or officials
and/or participants in the Sport and Recreation Industry.

Combined Qualifications

Students are able to enroll in multiple certificates at one time, completing them concurrently. Please note: This requires all/any pre-requisite units to be satisfied.

Students are also able to combine units, in order to gain dual qualifications in other specializations for only a small number of additional units. As the core units for any Diploma course in the Sport and Recreation Industry training package, are the same,

  • Dual qualifications are offered for Diploma/Certificate IV in Fitness/ Diploma/Certificate IV in Sport (Athlete support services)/ Diploma/Certificate IV in Massage in combination with Diploma of Sport (Development), etc.
  • Please note that upon completion of this qualification, you will have satisfied partial fulfillment of the following qualification:
    • Diploma of Fitness
    • Diploma of Sport (Coaching)
    • Diploma of Sport (Athlete Support Services)

Delivery

The course is delivered by a combination of face to face lectures (where applicable), practical workshops (where applicable), distance learning and online learning.

Fitness and health related training will be delivered in a classroom environment. Qualified coaches will act in mentoring roles to promote best practice and to enhance the student‟s experience and outcomes.

Research activities will be self paced and undertaken off campus.Assessment activities will be undertaken via theory tests, completion of assessment workbooks, observation/ questioning checklists under supervision by Global Fitness Institute trainers/assessors.

Although you can complete much of the course off-campus, where a course has scheduled practical requirements there is a 100% attendance requirement for ALL students.

As this course is delivered mostly via distance learning, it is self paced, meaning there is no minimum timeframe for course completion, as long as the student successfully completes all required tasks.

Understand however, that evidence must be provided to ensure that you have met all required levels of competency for each unit.

We allow a maximum of six months for you to complete the course but many students to finish the course in a shorter period. Course length may also be considerably shortened by successful application for Recognition of Prior Leaning (RPL), for those who have completed prior studies in related fields and/or have relevant industry experience.

Upon completion of this qualification, you will be issued with

  • a certificate indication the following;
    • this is to certify that „your name‟ has fulfilled all requirements for SRS50506- Diploma of Sport (Development)
  • a statement of attainment listing all completed units

Where a student does not complete all components of the course, a certificate of attainment will be issued with all competencies that have been satisfactorily completed and assessed.

First Aid

Students are required to hold a valid Level 2 First Aid certificate.

Global Fitness Institute deliver Accredited First Aid courses, please contact us for dates and locations, additional First Aid fee of $95.00 is to be paid at time of the course.

Where a student already has a current First Aid certificate (Level 2 minimum), or chooses to obtain First Aid elsewhere,
they are to present that copy for RPL purposes.
